Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy

My experience with education was based on remembering formulas and regurgitating random facts for assessments. However, this does not lead to a complete understanding of the information being presented. My goal in teaching would be for my future students to have a completely different experience and have an education based on a complete, deep understanding of the material being provided. One major idea that I think is very important is the idea of allowing students to learn not by lecture but by exploration, creating a constructivism style of learning. Allowing kids to experiment, ask questions. and find the answers to those questions gives them a deeper understanding of the material. This will allow students to face their misconceptions head-on and understand the concepts in a more meaningful way than if they were just told the information in the form of a lecture. This idea will be implemented in my classroom by using the Activity Before Content concept. This will allow my students to explore the concepts and discover things for themselves before they are told anything. Then, when additional information and vocabulary words are added the student will have a better understanding of the material. Another concept that is very important to my teaching philosophy is the idea that every student has the ability and the right to learn. No one is born with "innate intelligence" and no one has more of a right to an education than anyone else. I believe that everyone should have access to an equal education that is not based on their parent's wealth or resources. When I teach, the objective will be for students to have a conceptual understanding of the material covered in class and how it connects to previous material as well. The best way of assessing what students know and don’t know is by understanding their thought processes. This can be done by listening to students as they answer questions and have them say their steps out loud. Having the students explain their thoughts and answer questions provided by the teacher will show that they do not have a procedural understanding but instead a conceptual one.
